I have been a qualified Environmental Health Officer for ten years working within the public sector in both public health and food safety. I currently work within the business regulation team in a large local authority in central Scotland . My main job is the inspection of approved establishments and large scale manufacturers including fishery, meat products and dairy establishments.
I am passionate about promoting the positive role that environmental health can have in shaping healthier food and nutrition.
The most satisfying aspect of the job for me is engaging with operators, supporting their growth and helping them to enhance their business through food safety interventions.
I am a professional examiner for graduates in both Food Hygiene and Food Standards for the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland. This is a role I really enjoy in helping to develop new officers in the industry.
I have recently been a guest lecturer at the University of the West Scotland and my main lecturing interests are:
The principles of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)
-Food safety enforcement
-Food safety inspections
REHIS Diploma in Environmental Health
MSc Environmental Health
Official Control Verification in Food Manufacturing (2017)
Bivalve Purification Inspections (2013)
Royal Society of Public Health Level 4 Award in Nutrition (2010)
Campden BRI Assessment of HACCP systems Level 3 (2009)
ISO 9001:2008 Lead Auditor
I started my career as an EHO working for local authority. After experiencing all areas of the job I realised that health and safety was where my interest lay as it was also an area full of misinformation and misunderstanding.
Since leaving local authority I have managed health and safety in the charity sector, further education sector and heavy manufacturing.
I am a qualified internal auditor for ISO 45001:2018 and have a wide range of experience across a variety of health and safety topics.
The most satisfying part of my job is when I help people realise that health and safety is not a burden and is not about saying 'no' but that it is actually a useful tool that, when applied correctly, makes workplaces healthier, happier and safer.
